| Lucio
completed his post graduation in tropical
architecture in London. During his studies,
he was inspired by the architectural
works of such legends as Frank Lloyd
Wright, Antoni Gaudi and Louis Kahn.
He traveled frequently to Europe and
the US, but his heart was in Goa and
he decided to return after the Liberation.
He passionately believed that there
was great value in the tried and tested
Goan architectural style and became
a staunch advocate of it, Thus, he set
about redefining modern Goan architecture.
Drawing
his inspiration from the old houses
and grand palaces of Goa, he fused traditional
Goan Architecture with modern form and
functionality. This led him to build
practical and aesthetically pleasing
structures that blended in beautifully
with the Goan countryside.
Lucio
aptly demonstrated that semi outdoor
living with courtyards and balconies
and living spaces designed for cross
ventilation are perfectly suited for
the Goan tropical climate.
Today
Lucio’s projects display distinct Goan
architectural features like sloping
Mangalore tile roofs, eves boards, courtyards,
arched windows and balconies laced with
balustrades and the signature Goan arched
windows. Some of his well known projects
include The Don Bosco High School, The
Ronil, Bambolim Beach Resort and Sun
Village resort, the Titan factory at
Verem, the Church of Siridao, the residences
of Dattaraj and Dipti Salgaocar and
Cezar and Mimi Menezes at Dona Paula.
Lucio
was passionate about protecting and
conserving the unique Goan style and
heritage and was actively involved with
cultural organizations such as INTACH
(Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural
Heritage) the Gulbenkien Foundation
and Fundacao Oriente.
He also
produced several documentary films that
chronicled the evolution of Goan architecture.
